Overview

For the past 20 years, we have been witnessing huge advancements made by scientific research in the field of data computation in order to face the unceasing increase of the volume of raw data daily generated by billions of IoT devices deployed worldwide. In that regard, Big Data techniques have been developed to accommodate the need of applications to cope with huge amounts of pervasive data in many applicative fields. Cloud Computing completes the “technologies triangle” by providing flexible and scalable computing infrastructures that serve the data analytics purpose. In the most general case, Cloud Computing providers’ premises that offer data analytics services are distant from data sources. Typically, after their generation, data have to traverse low-performing geographical networks in order to physically reach the place where they get mined. The IoT-to-Cloud data path may suffer disruptions and/or delays that most applications can not tolerate due to the dynamics of the processes they govern. To this end, Edge/Fog Computing has envisaged intermediate (yet less powerful) computing layers that shorten the data path to computation, thus mitigating the mentioned delay. The Computing Continuum concept refers to the opportunity of taking advantage of a broad computing context that mixes Cloud, Edge and IoT resources, thus providing a “continuum” of computing services that applications will be able to access in a transparent and uniform fashion. In the Computing Continuum landscape, each application benefits from a pervasive computing environment, built on top of mixed, heterogeneous and even mobile resources, that promises to meet the application requirements in terms of both computing power and delay sensitivity. Particularly, applications will need a flexible and dynamic provisioning of computing resources along the Things-to-Cloud path, that is, a provisioning system capable of orchestrating (activating, deactivating, integrating, etc.) computing resources offered by heterogeneous infrastructures possibly owned by different providers. If on the one hand the benefits promised by such an approach to end-users are clear, on the other one there are a bunch of not just technological challenges that have to be faced in order for it to be workable in the practice. This workshop encourages submissions that address opportunities and issues of the computing continuum landscape, and proposes experimental solutions, case studies, deployed systems and best practices in this specific research context. The workshop is an opportunity for researchers to gather and discuss the advantages of integrating multiple computing infrastructure layers into a unified and pervasive computing context capable of offering customers a one-shop virtual place where services can be tailored and offered in a transparent and uniform way.

We invite original research papers that have not been previously published and are not currently under review for publication elsewhere.
Submitted papers should be no longer than 6 pages in two-column IEEE template format. The review process is single blind. All accepted papers will be published as part of the Percom satellite events proceedings. Proceedings will be published by the IEEE and available online through IEEE Digital Library (EI indexing).

A "Best Paper Award" certificate will be conferred on the author(s) of a paper presented at the workshop, selected by the Chairs based on scientific significance, originality and outstanding technical quality of the paper, as assessed also by the evaluations of the members of the Program Committee.

Best papers presented at the workshop will be selected and the corresponding authors will be invited to submit an extended version of their papers for possible publications in:
